Good design and build quality. Affordable. Good overall user experience.CONS
Performance of the device is a bit underwhelming.BOTTOM LINE
If you're a gamer and would like a device that you could carry around quite easily to enjoy some casual gaming time, you could consider the Acer Predator 8 gaming tablet.
Acer announced its new Predator 8 gaming tablet, back in June 2015. We recently received a review unit at PC Mag Labs for a test run. This one is an 8-inch tablet running Android Lollipop OS. It derives its computing power from an Intel Atom X7-Z8700 processor.
The Predator is a very unusual-looking tablet, with its four speakers jutting out from the corners. You won't mistake it for anything else. The overall design and build quality was quite good. The tablet measures around 0.34 inches thick, and weighs about 348-gms.
The Predator 8 comes with an 8.0-inch display that offers a resolution of 1920-by-1200 pixels. In addition, the tablet also comes with 2GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of onboard storage. The Predator 8 also comes with a microSD slot on the left edge, which will let you expand the internal storage capacity further. The tablet is also bundled with capable Gen. 8-LP Intel HD Graphics for all your mobile gaming needs.
A stand out feature of the Predator 8 is that it comes with a technology that Acer calls TacSense. TacSense is essentially a force feedback technology such as vibrations or rumbles when play certain games. Acer has in fact worked with Gameloft to build support for TacSense into Asphalt 8, which is preloaded onto the device.
When it comes to real world performance, the Acer Predator 8 does a good job. We threw the GFXBench 3.0 benchmark at the Predator 8, and it got 15 fps on the Manhattan test and 31 fps on the T-Rex test. On Geekbench, it got 1030 single-core and 2985 multi-core. Those are very respectable scores for a general-purpose tablet, however we were expecting the scores to be a bit on the higher side, since the Predator 8 is being advertised as a beastly gaming device.
At an asking price of $299, the Predator 8 is very well-priced. If you're a gamer and would like a device that you could carry around quite easily to enjoy some casual gaming time, you could consider the Acer Predator 8 gaming tablet.
